After trying out in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, beginning in August 1957, the #Broadway production opened to highly positive reviews.
The day after the premiere, Walter Kerr of The New York Times raved that, "The radioactive fallout from 'West Side Story' must still be descending on Broadway this morning."
The production was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, earning him the Tony Award for Best Choreographer.
Oliver Smith also won the Tony Award for Best Scenic Designer. The production starred Larry Kert as Tony, Carol Lawrence as Maria and Chita Rivera as Anita, and ran for 732 performances at the Winter Garden Theatre before touring and then returning to the Winter Garden Theatre in 1960 for a 253 performance engagement.
